Toni M. is one of our Principal Systems Engineers. He combines expert-level electromechanical engineering, software development, controls, photography, video, and communications expertise to enable his solo kayak expeditions in Baja California. Tony draws upon these skills to capture stunning still photography and video of his journeys, which may be of be several months in length.

Toni solved multiple engineering challenges with tech he adapted, integrated, or custom developed to withstand harsh, open sea conditions. Some of his innovations include solar charging systems, global communications, GPS positioning, underwater and flying drones, mechanical and solar powered desalination. Everything had to be customized or optimized to fit into the kayak, and withstand two months of exposure to the elements.

Storing all of the audio-visual, tech, and communications gear on the kayak, along with food, water, clothing, medical supplies, emergency gear, camping gear, and cooking gear for multi-week periods without resupply, is a miracle of efficient storage in itself.

All of Toni’s efforts are in support of his conservation efforts for the Baja marine environment. Through his multiple expeditions and research, he has developed very specialized knowledge of Mobula rays in particular, which he shares with scientists in Mexico and the US. To appreciate how ambitious these expeditions are, have a look at some of the videos Toni has published and enjoy some of the photographs below.
