THE CLIENT’S NEED

A current NOVO employee was a key member of a team tasked with designing a completely new large-format inkjet printer and printhead with a 3x performance/price improvement.

THE TECHNICAL AND DESIGN CHALLENGES

The chassis of the printer was to be the centerpiece of this machine, which required high precision on unusually large printheads. Orienting the service station to the printhead via the chassis proved to be especially difficult.

THE ENGINEERING BEHIND GREAT PRODUCTS

This printer called for system design and system integration; depth and breadth of experience allowed the engineer to apply and combine concepts from other fields to this design. Because the printer and printhead were being designed simultaneously, special care had to be taken with planning and coordination in order to engineer and test their interaction.

Included in the printer was a large extruded-aluminum beam, and the NOVO engineer designed the machining process development to flatten the beam, then managed the vendor for machining the beam.
